The Creation and Dissolution of Sand Mandalas

Since this blog is an account of my Fulbright research on mandalas, I thought I’d include related links here for you to see the creation and dissolution of two Tibetan sand mandalas made by monks of His Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, which I had previously documented on video. Please enjoy!

One is Yamantaka, created on the occasion of this high yoga tantra ritual at Namgyal Monastery, Dharamsala, India. I had traveled there to study Tibetan art and meditative practices in the Fall of 2010, with the support of an Asian Cultural Council grant.

The other is a time lapse of a Compassion sand mandala, created by Drepung Gomang monks on the occasion of the Dalai Lama’s talks on Creativity and Compassion at Western Connecticut State University, in October, 2012. Organized by Do Ngak Kunphen Ling Tibetan Center for Universal Peace, and WCSU. The monks were here from India on a Sacred Art Tour.
